Another way the Government can collect money from us

Many people will not be aware the law on SORN (Statutary Off Road Notification) has changed.

The DVLA database can now instantly match any vehicle against MOT, Vehicle Tax and insurance registers. They have endless opportunities to issue fines!

From February 4th 2011 it became an offence to own a vehicle without a valid insurance even if it has a current  Tax cover, unless you declare SORN to the DVLA.

So if you buy a bike and you are not going to insure it straight away, declare SORN instantly or you could face an automatic fine. Also, if you take your bike off the road at any time and the insurance runs out, you need to renew it at once or declare SORN even if you keep a valid Tax cover on it.

Don’t forget that if you buy a bike and the previous owner has declared SORN this does not transfer to the next owner. Many people have been caught out on that. You need to make a fresh application in your name.
